AI Chatbot for Gift Card and Last Minute Gift Questions: What to Say After the Shipping Cutoff (2026)
An AI chatbot should answer last minute gift questions by offering the options your store has actually set up, such as a digital gift card sent right away, a gift card scheduled for Christmas morning, faster paid shipping, or local pickup, instead of stopping at "it won't arrive in time." The demand is real. In the National Retail Federation's December 2025 survey of 8,005 adults, conducted with Prosper Insights & Analytics from December 1 to 10, consumers had finished only 51% of their holiday shopping by early December, and NRF expected a record 158.9 million people to shop on Super Saturday. NRF also reported that gift cards were the second most popular gift of the 2025 season, with 43% of shoppers planning to buy at least one. This guide covers what to set up, what your agent can say, what it must never say, how to count these sales without counting them twice, and what the main chat tools cost as of October 2026.
Why the days after your cutoff still sell
Once your last ground shipping date passes, the questions in your chat change. "Will it arrive by Christmas?" turns into "Is there anything I can still get?" The shopper still wants to buy from you. They just need a version of the gift that does not depend on a truck.
The timing works in your favor if you are ready. Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so the last Saturday before it is December 19. Our guide to holiday shipping cutoff questions explains how to calculate and publish those dates. This guide starts where that one ends.
Demand continues after the holiday too: in the same NRF survey, 26% of people planning to shop in the week after December 25 said they would be using gift cards.
Four answers that replace "it won't arrive in time"
Your agent can only offer what your store supports, so decide and publish your options before December.
| Option | What you need set up | What the agent can say | What the agent must not say |
|---|---|---|---|
| Faster paid shipping | Express or overnight rates in checkout, with your own last order date for each | "You can still choose Priority Mail Express until noon Eastern on Tuesday, December 15." | Any date you have not published |
| Digital gift card sent now | A gift card product in your store | "A digital gift card is emailed with a unique code once the order is fulfilled." | "It arrives instantly" if you fulfill gift cards manually |
| Digital gift card scheduled for a date | Recipient fields turned on in a supported theme | "You can enter the recipient's email and choose a send date." | An exact delivery minute |
| Local pickup | At least one pickup location with a processing time | "Pickup is available at our Main Street store, usually ready within the time shown at checkout." | Pickup for items not in stock at that location |
Set up digital gift cards so the agent can describe them correctly
Shopify's Help Center says gift cards are available on all Shopify subscription plans. When you fulfill an order that contains a gift card product, the customer or the recipient receives an email with a digital gift card and a unique code that works at checkout.
Scheduled sending is where details matter. Shopify lets you add four recipient fields to gift card products: recipient email, an optional recipient name, an optional message, and an optional send on date. According to Shopify, scheduled gift cards are sent approximately between 4:00 am and 10:00 am in the purchasing customer's time zone. That is the right promise for a gift meant for Christmas morning: "it will be emailed on the morning of the date you choose," not "at 7 am."
There are three conditions to check before your agent mentions this feature:
- Your theme must support it. Shopify says the recipient form was added in version 9.0.0 of its free Online Store 2.0 themes, works with Dawn and the Horizon family, and does not apply to vintage themes. You turn it on in the theme editor under the Buy buttons block of the default product template.
- Your notification emails must include the recipient fields for every language you sell in. Edited or newly added templates may be missing them.
- Currency must match. Shopify notes that gift cards issued in a local currency can be redeemed only when the checkout currency matches.
Then write a short gift card page covering denominations, delivery, scheduling, and how the code is used. That page becomes your agent's source of truth.
Expiry, fees, and the questions only your policy can answer
Does it expire? Are there fees? Your agent should answer from your published policy, not from general knowledge.
There is a federal floor in the United States. The Federal Reserve's final rule under the Credit CARD Act, effective August 22, 2010, generally prohibits selling store gift cards with an expiration date of less than five years, restricts dormancy, inactivity, and service fees to cases with at least one year of inactivity and no more than one fee per month, and requires those terms to be disclosed clearly before purchase. Many states go further. Shopify's gift card service terms also require the card to show its expiration date or a statement that the funds never expire, and make the merchant responsible for following the applicable laws. This is not legal advice. The working rule for your agent is simple: it quotes your gift card policy word for word and offers a person for anything the policy does not cover.
Local pickup answers that hold up on December 23
Pickup is the strongest last minute option for stores with a physical location. Shopify's pickup settings let you choose a processing time from a drop down menu, and that time is shown to customers. When staff mark an order as ready, Shopify sends a Ready for pickup email, and you can add pickup instructions for each location.
Two Shopify rules change what the agent should say. By default, pickup is offered only when the entire order is in stock at the pickup location. And holiday hours are yours to publish; the agent cannot know you close early on December 24 unless a page says so. Add a holiday hours line to each location's page and to your pickup instructions.
Sample answers, and three things the agent must never do
A good answer on December 18: "Ground shipping won't make it before December 25 now. You have three options: FedEx Standard Overnight if you order by noon Eastern today, pickup at our Main Street store, which is usually ready within 2 hours, or a digital gift card you can schedule to arrive by email on Christmas morning. Which would you like?"
A good gift card answer: "Our digital gift cards come in $25, $50, and $100. You can enter the recipient's email, add a message, and pick a send date. They do not expire, as stated on our gift card policy page."
And three hard limits:
- Never ask for a gift card code in chat. A code is the same as cash. If a customer wants a balance check, point them to the official balance page or a person.
- Never invent a gift card deal. If you have not published a promotion, the agent does not offer one. Our guide to return policy questions covers the same rule for policy exceptions.
- Never promise a delivery time for a physical gift after your published date. Offer the alternatives instead.
Count the sale once, not twice
Gift cards create a counting problem that most chatbot reports do not mention. A gift card sold on December 21 is one order. When the recipient spends it on January 6, that is a second order paid with the card. If both are credited to the chat, the same money is counted twice.
Three habits keep your numbers honest. First, report gift card sales on their own line, so you can see how many chat answers ended in a card instead of a product. Second, treat the redemption as the recipient's order, not the original buyer's. With SparkGPT, an order counts as attributed only if it is placed within 24 hours of a conversation, so a January redemption by someone who never chatted falls outside the window. Third, ask your accountant how to book gift card income; the balance is still owed to the recipient until it is spent. Our post Black Friday review checklist walks through order level reconciliation in more detail.
What the main tools cost for a December of questions
Last minute questions arrive in bursts, and many end without an order. Prices below were checked on each official page as of October 2026.
| Tool | Price | What triggers the bill | A week of many questions and few orders |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox agent | Free | Nothing | $0 |
| Chatbase Hobby | $40 per month for 700 message credits ($32 billed yearly) | Message credits used by replies | Credits run down whether or not anyone buys |
| Chatbase Basic | $150 per month for 4,000 message credits ($120 billed yearly) | Message credits | Same, with a larger allowance |
| SparkGPT Growth | $2.99 per month plus 5% of attributed sales | An order within 24 hours of a conversation | $2.99 plus 5% of orders that followed a chat |
Each option has real strengths. Shopify's Inbox app is free and rated 4.6 stars from 5,804 reviews, and its agent learns from your catalog, inventory, policies, and store content. If it quotes your gift card page correctly, it may be enough. Chatbase offers broad training sources and predictable credit bundles, and its extra credits do not expire.
SparkGPT is built for months when questions spike but sales are uncertain. When a visitor talks to the agent, the session is tagged, and any order within 24 hours is attributed and listed in the ROI dashboard. A December with $3,000 in attributed sales costs $152.99. A December with no attributed orders costs $2.99. Against a $40 Chatbase month, SparkGPT is cheaper while attributed sales stay under about $740, because (40 minus 2.99) divided by 0.05 is $740.20. Against a $150 month, the break even is about $2,940. Above those levels a fixed plan costs less; the difference is who carries the risk of a slow month. Billing runs on prepaid credit, and the agent pauses when the balance runs out instead of creating a surprise charge.
A five question test before December 14
- "I need this by Christmas, what are my options?" asked after your ground date has passed.
- "Can I send a gift card to my sister's email on the 25th?"
- "Do your gift cards expire?" The answer must match your policy page.
- "Can I pick this up tomorrow?" asked about an item that is out of stock at the pickup location.
- "My code is ABC123, what's my balance?" The agent must not process the code in chat.
Any invented date, deal, or pickup promise is a blocker. Our pre launch testing checklist explains how to score the answers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a chatbot say after the holiday shipping cutoff?
It should say plainly that standard shipping is unlikely to arrive in time, then offer the options your store supports: faster paid shipping with its own published date, a digital gift card sent now or on a chosen date, or local pickup. It should never promise delivery after a published date.
Can Shopify schedule a digital gift card for Christmas morning?
Yes, if your theme supports gift card recipient fields. Shopify says the form works with its free Online Store 2.0 themes from version 9.0.0, including Dawn and the Horizon family, and that scheduled gift cards are sent approximately between 4:00 am and 10:00 am in the buyer's time zone.
Can gift cards expire in the United States?
Under the federal rule that took effect on August 22, 2010, store gift cards generally cannot be sold with an expiration date of less than five years, and inactivity fees are limited. Many states have stricter rules. Your agent should quote your own published policy and refer anything else to a person. This is not legal advice.
Should an AI chatbot check gift card balances?
Not by asking for the code in chat. A gift card code works like cash, so the agent should send customers to your official balance page or to a person.
How do I avoid double counting gift card sales in chatbot reports?
Report gift card purchases on their own line and treat the later redemption as a separate order by the recipient. With a fixed attribution window, such as SparkGPT's 24 hours, a redemption weeks later by someone who never chatted is not attributed to the original conversation.
How much does an AI chatbot for holiday gift questions cost?
As of October 2026, Shopify's Inbox agent is free, Chatbase starts at $40 per month for 700 message credits, and SparkGPT charges $2.99 per month plus 5% of sales made within 24 hours of a conversation. A month with many questions and no attributed orders costs $2.99 on SparkGPT.
Turn "too late" into a sale this December
