How to Make Your Shopify Store Visible to AI Search (2026 Guide)
To make a Shopify store visible to AI search, check three layers in order. First, make sure AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot are not blocked in your robots.txt, because OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Second, confirm your products are live in Shopify Catalog and that agentic storefronts are turned on under Sales channels, Agentic. Third, customize your store's agents.md file, which Shopify now treats as the main discovery file for AI agents. Then do the step most guides skip: make sure the page an AI visitor lands on can answer the question they arrived with.
The three layers AI systems read
Different AI systems read different parts of your store, and each layer has its own controls (as of September 2026).
| Layer | What it is | Who reads it | Default on Shopify | What you control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web pages | Your product, collection, and content pages | AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Claude-SearchBot | Shopify's default robots.txt does not block major AI crawlers | robots.txt.liquid, page content, FAQ sections |
| Product catalog | Structured product data in Shopify Catalog | AI channels connected through agentic storefronts, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta | Active by default for eligible stores | Channel selection, product data, Catalog Mapping, Unlisted status |
| Agent files | /agents.md, /llms.txt, and the /.well-known/ucp profile | AI agents that shop or browse on a buyer's behalf | Shopify generates default files for every store | templates/agents.md.liquid and templates/llms.txt.liquid |
Step 1: Let AI search crawlers in
Start with the simplest failure. OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs, according to its crawler documentation. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models. ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user asks ChatGPT to do something. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to train on your content. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers.
Shopify's default robots.txt blocks admin, cart, and checkout paths but not major AI search bots. Problems usually come from three places:
- A custom robots.txt.liquid template added by you, an agency, or an app, with a blanket rule against AI bots.
- Bot protection apps or firewall rules that block unknown user agents before robots.txt is ever read.
- A password protected storefront, which hides everything from everyone.
To check, open yourstore.com/robots.txt in a browser and search for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and GPTBot. If you want to stay out of model training but stay in AI search, you can disallow GPTBot and leave OAI-SearchBot allowed. Edit rules in Online Store, Themes, Edit code, under Templates, by adding to robots.txt.liquid rather than replacing Shopify's defaults.
Step 2: Turn on agentic storefronts and check your catalog
Shopify now sends product data to AI channels through Shopify Catalog. According to the Shopify Help Center, agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, and you choose which AI channels to sell on from Sales channels, Agentic in your admin. The channels Shopify lists include ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces. Using the feature requires agreeing to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
Three checks are worth doing now:
- Open Sales channels, Agentic and confirm the channels you want are on. Do not assume that "on by default" means your store qualified.
- Review product statuses. Shopify's guidance is that setting a product to Unlisted hides it from AI channels. It also hides the product from search engines and your own store search, so use Unlisted only for products you want hidden everywhere.
- Check whether your product data lives in custom fields. Shopify lists products for AI channels with title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes. If your real product details sit in metafields, metaobjects, or tag prefixes, Shopify recommends Shopify Catalog Mapping so those fields reach AI channels.
Step 3: Fill the gaps in your product pages
AI systems can only repeat what your pages say. A product description written for a human skimming photos often leaves out the facts an assistant needs to recommend you: exact dimensions, materials, compatibility, what is in the box, shipping times, and who the product is not for.
There is a second reason to fix this. Research on live chat on Taobao by Sun, Chen, and Fan (Production and Operations Management, 2021) found that chat's positive effect on conversion was stronger when product page information was less comprehensive. The same study found chat's persuasive effect was stronger on lower priced products, so the lesson is about information, not pressure. Complete pages help AI search describe your products accurately, and they give any chat assistant on your own site better material to answer from.
A practical test: ask ChatGPT or Perplexity to compare your product with a competitor's. Each vague or wrong answer usually points to a missing fact on your page.
Step 4: Customize agents.md, not just llms.txt
Many guides still tell merchants to upload an llms.txt file. On Shopify, that advice is out of date.
Shopify began serving default AI discovery files to every store in spring 2026, including /llms.txt, /agents.md, and a /.well-known/ucp profile for the Universal Commerce Protocol. A Shopify staff reply on the Shopify developer forum in May 2026 described /agents.md as the primary storefront discovery file for agentic and AI experiences. As of the May 28, 2026 change documented by theme developer Weaverse, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt serve the same content as agents.md unless you override them, and three theme templates control the files:
- templates/agents.md.liquid controls /agents.md, and by fallback the other two
- templates/llms.txt.liquid controls /llms.txt only
- templates/llms-full.txt.liquid controls /llms-full.txt only
The default file is useful but generic. It tells agents how to search your catalog, build a cart, and hand checkout back to the buyer for approval. It does not tell them anything about your products. Our own tea store, Tastea, is an example: as of September 30, 2026, its agents.md is the Shopify default. It explains the UCP endpoints and the buyer approval rule for payment, and says nothing about which tea suits a beginner or how the teas differ.
What to add when you customize it:
- A one paragraph description of what you sell and who it is for.
- Guidance for choosing, such as "for first time buyers, start with the sampler" or a size guide summary.
- Links to your policy pages: shipping, returns, warranty.
- A contact route for questions an agent cannot answer.
Keep it factual, and keep the default transaction instructions in place.
Step 5: Write pages that answer questions directly
AI search tends to quote short, direct answers. Open guides and FAQ pages with a two or three sentence answer, add FAQ sections on key product pages, use tables for specifications, and keep facts consistent everywhere. If your shipping page says 3 to 5 days and a product page says 5 to 7, an AI system has two answers to choose from.
Step 6: Measure AI referral traffic separately
You cannot improve what you cannot see. OpenAI states that ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs from ChatGPT search. In Shopify analytics or GA4, filter sessions by that source to see how many visitors ChatGPT sends, what they view, and whether they buy. Other assistants label traffic less consistently, so also check referrer domains such as perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
How much is at stake? Adobe Analytics, based on more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites, reported that traffic from generative AI tools during the 2025 holiday season rose 693.4% year over year, and that AI referred visitors converted 31% more than other traffic sources, spent 45% more time on site, and were 33% less likely to leave immediately. These are averages across US retail, not a forecast for your store, but they suggest AI referred shoppers arrive further along in their decision.
The part most guides skip: what happens after the click
An AI referral is not a normal visit. The shopper already asked a question, got a summary, and clicked through to check the details. They land on your product page with a follow up question, such as whether it ships to Canada, whether the medium runs small, or whether it works with their model.
If your page answers it, they can buy. If not, they go back to the assistant, which may send them elsewhere.
This is where an on site sales agent fits. SparkGPT builds an AI sales agent from your website content, so the same complete pages you wrote for AI search become the agent's source of answers. The agent picks up the conversation on your site and answers the follow up question in seconds, at any hour.
When a visitor chats with the agent, the session is tagged, and a purchase within 24 hours is attributed to the agent and listed in the ROI dashboard. You can compare three groups: AI referrals who chatted, AI referrals who did not, and everyone else. For a deeper method, see How to Measure Chatbot Attributed Revenue.
Pricing follows the same logic. The Growth plan is $49 per month plus 5% of sales attributed within 24 hours, with unlimited conversations and prepaid credits (1 credit = $1). If the agent sells nothing in a month, you pay the $49 base. The Free plan lets you build and test an agent with no credit card. Setup on Shopify is one line of code:
<script src="https://admin.sparkgpt.ai/widget.js" data-api-key="YOUR_WIDGET_KEY"></script>
The Shopify setup guide shows where it goes, and How to Train a Chatbot on Your Website Content covers preparing the pages it learns from.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shopify automatically make my store visible to ChatGPT?
Partly. Shopify's default robots.txt does not block major AI search crawlers, Shopify generates default agent files for every store, and agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. You still need to confirm your channels in Sales channels, Agentic, complete your product data, and customize agents.md.
Do I still need an llms.txt file on Shopify?
Not as a separate upload. Since late May 2026, Shopify serves /llms.txt as a mirror of /agents.md unless you create templates/llms.txt.liquid. Customizing templates/agents.md.liquid updates all three files at once.
Should I block GPTBot on my Shopify store?
That is a business choice. Blocking GPTBot opts your content out of model training. It does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. If you block anything, make sure OAI-SearchBot stays allowed.
How can I tell if ChatGPT is sending me customers?
Filter your analytics by utm_source=chatgpt.com, which OpenAI says ChatGPT adds to referral links from search. Compare those sessions' conversion rate with your store average, and check which product pages they land on.
Does an on site AI agent help with AI search traffic?
It helps with what happens after the visit. AI referred shoppers usually arrive with a specific follow up question. An agent trained on your pages can answer it on the spot, and with SparkGPT any purchase within 24 hours of a chat is attributed and shown in the ROI dashboard.
Make the click count
AI search brings better informed shoppers. Answering their next question turns them into orders. Build a SparkGPT agent from your store URL on the Free plan in about 10 minutes, with no credit card, and test it with the questions AI referred shoppers ask. When it answers well, go live on Growth for $49 per month plus 5% of sales it makes within 24 hours. See pricing or the ecommerce solutions page, and send questions to hello@sparkgpt.ai.
Build your agent free and see what it sells
Paste your URL and get a working sales agent in about ten minutes. Test it against the questions your customers actually ask. It costs $0, needs no credit card, and never expires. When it goes live, you pay $49 a month plus 5% of the sales it is credited with.
Build My Agent Free →No credit card required. Your agent is ready to test in about 10 minutes.
